A number of customers have asked about what impact the current economic turmoil is having on AMSOIL. Here are four observations addressing these current issues.

1. Raw materials costs have remained high
Regarding pricing of our products, the price of oil has recently fluctuated almost $30 per barrel in less than a 30 day time frame. This prevents oil and chemical providers from jumping on the bandwagon to change prices with 30 days notice due to the uncertainty of where things are going. To start moving costs downward will require a period of stability and lower oil prices. Even then, it will take some time for lower costs to work their way through inventories that can result in price decreases to AMSOIL that we can in turn offer to our customers.

2. AMSOIL price increases have been smaller than others
AMSOIL has not been exempt from the high cost of raw materials for formulating its products. Nevertheless, on a percentage basis we’ve managed to hold the line on price increases to a greater extent than many of our competitors.

As of this date the company still has not received a single price reduction on any of its raw materials even though the price of oil and gasoline seems to have fallen dramatically. There are several reasons for this. First, there are still supply issues for lubricant base stocks and additives due to the impact of hurricane Ike on refineries and chemical processing plants in Texas and Louisiana. Many of the refineries in the region were affected and some have still not restarted operations yet. As a result, prices remain high. Also, the volatility of crude oil has frozen the oil and chemical industries in place and prevented them from taking any pricing action.

Customers can be confident that when it becomes possible to lower prices, AMSOIL will do the right thing.

Mobil will not recommend or guarantee 25,000 mile/1-year drain intervals like AMSOIL 5W-30, 10W-30 or 10W-40 or 35,000 mile/1-year drain intervals like our 0W-30 Signature Series SSO synthetic engine oil does and that's a fact.

In fact up until about 10-15 years ago many of these manufacturers never even had a synthetic (except Mobil 1). They were too busy trying to debunk the benefits of synthetics to the average consumer! Now, technology, competition and consumer demand has forced every major oil manufacturer to have a synthetic, and they are now also claiming the same benefits that at one time they were trying to debunk, but yet not a single one even comes close to offering the protection and performance that AMSOIL does. CASTROL AND MOBIL GO TO BATTLE IN COURT:

Recently, Mobil accused Castrol of reformulating its synthetic by substituting other basestocks in place of its synthetic polyaphaolefins (PAO's). Castrol Syntec is a hydrocracked oil. That's right, Castrol has replaced the PAO synthetic base stock with hydroisomerized "petroleum base stock." Hydrocracking, as it's called, is the highest level of petroleum refining. Castrol isn't even a true synthetic yet Castrol ended up winning the battle when the National Advertising Division of the Council of Better Business Bureaus ruled that Castrol could still market its oil as "synthetic" despite their new formulation. Basically, they expanded the definition of synthetics to include Group III hydroprocessed petroleum oil. This high profile case took place because synthetics are recognized as the market's best hope for growth. Synthetic motor oil sales have outpaced petroleum oil sales by a wide margin and the gap continues to widen every year. Consumers are getting smarter and demand the best for their vehicles!
